【Title】Surface Modification of Biomaterials

Time:  16:00-18:00 pm, Aug. 23rd, 2018

Location:  New MSE Building, No. 03 Meeting Room (新材料大楼材料学院第三会议室)

Abstract:The interactions between biomaterials and biological tissues and fluids depends on the surface properties of the biomaterials and subsequent biological response.  Biomaterials with the favorable bulk characteristics sometimes may not induce the proper biological and biochemical functions and surface modification is frequently performed to optimize the surface properties of biomaterials.  By implementing surface modification, pre-designed surface properties such as biocompatibility and microbial resistance can be introduced whereas favorable bulk attributes such as mechanical strength and chemical inertness can be preserved.  Plasma immersion ion implantation and deposition (PIII&D) is one of the common plasma treatment techniques for biomaterials and biomedical implants.  Furthermore, the interface between biodegradable biomaterials and tissues and body fluids is dynamic and PIII&D offers the unique capability of tailoring the interfacial chemistry to realize controlled and timely degradation.  In this plenary presentation, the recent research activities in the Plasma Laboratory of City University of Hong Kong pertaining to surface treatment of biomaterials and biomedical devices, especially biodegradable materials, will be described.
