【Title】Topological Insulators, Novel Superconductors and Ultra-Thin Films Beyond Graphene

Time: 9:00-10:00 am, Jun. 29th, 2018

Location:  New MSE Building, No. 01 Meeting Room(新材料大楼材料学院第一会议室)

Abstract:

I will discuss some of our recent work aimed at understanding the electronic structure and spectroscopy of novel superconductors, topological materials, and atomically thin 2D films beyond graphene. Illustrative examples will include: (i) How by exploiting electronic structure techniques we have been able to predict and understand the characteristics of many new classes of binary, ternary and quaternary topologically interesting materials, including topological crystalline insulators and Weyl semi-metal phases; (ii) How atomically thin ‘beyond graphene’ 2D and layered materials offer exciting new possibilities for manipulating electronic structures and novel platforms for fundamental science studies and applications; (iii) With regard to the high-Tc’s, I will discuss recent breakthroughs in modeling the insulating pristine compounds and the transition from the insulating to the metallic state with doping without invoking any free parameters.

【Title】Kinetics of order-order and order-disordertransitions in block copolymers

Time: 10:00-11:00 am, Jun. 29th, 2018

Location:  New MSE Building, No. 01 Meeting Room(新材料大楼材料学院第一会议室)

Abstract:

Block copolymers are known to form micelles of different shapes in selective solvents that preferentially dissolve one of the constituent blocks. These micellar fluids exhibit various ordered and disordered phases. To gain microscopic insight into the mechanisms involved in the transformation between different phases we use synchrotron-based time-resolved small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS)  following rapid change in temperature or pressure. In this talk I will describe results on the kinetics of the transformation from the hexagonal packed cylinder (HEX) phase to cubic phases (FCC or BCC) and to a gyroid phase, as well as transitions from ordered cubic phase to disordered micellar fluid. SAXS data was interpreted with a geometrical model for the transformation from cylinders to spheres. Brownian Dynamics simulation for an ABA triblock copolymer in a solvent selective for the A block will also be presented.
