New Materials research division focuses on the innovation of preparation technology, application of new materials, involving advanced ceramic materials, military materials, new metal materials, and mechanization of alloy. The division combines closely the fundamental research, theoretical study of material science and the development, application of new engineering materials, guided by the demands of national goals and enterprise. Plenty of new materials, novel processing technologies and modifications of the traditional materials have been achieved in the past decades; many of them play key roles on the national economy and national security. Current research focuses of the center are: (1) Advanced Ceramic Materials: Preparation and processing of advanced ceramics and their mechanical and functional properties, including: Carbide/nitride ceramics, Machinable ceramics, Porous ceramics, Wood ceramics, Carbon materials, Optical ceramics, Dental ceramics, Thermoelectric ceramics, Nano-energy materials. (2) Mechanical alloying preparation technology: Mechanical alloying with high-energy ball mill technology, to develop new alloy material, amorphous alloy, quasi crystal and nano materials, intermetallic compounds, supersaturated solid solution, the undissolved compounds, and nano composite materials.
