Education Objective

I. Master students

Students should master the basic scientific knowledge of Materials Science and Engineering. With the skillful technology of engineering and expertise in laboratory and equipment operating, the students should be knowledgeable in the research and study of materials, material processing, testing and analyzing abilities etc.

II. Doctor Students

Education for Doctors’ Degree aims at cultivating professional researchers and scientists who can exceed in the world-wide material-related fields. Students should be innovative and creative enough to contribute and achieve valuable scientific results in Materials Science and Engineering.

Dates and Deadlines

Online application:

Scholarship period: from now until March 31, 2026, 17:00 (Beijing Time)；

Self-funded batch: from now until May 15, 2026, 17:00 (Beijing Time).

Scholarships

1. Chinese Government Scholarship

Tuition waiver, accommodation provided, living expenses covered, and comprehensive medical insurance for international students in China.

2. Xi'an Jiaotong University Master's and Ph.D. International Student Newcomer Scholarship

Applicants submit their applications through the Xi'an Jiaotong University international student application system. The scholarship is for the degree program first year.

3. Xi'an Municipal Government "Belt and Road" International Student Scholarship

Applicants submit their applications through the Xi'an Jiaotong University international student application system. The scholarship is for the first year of the academic program first year.

How to Apply

Step 1. Students applying for the CSC program should start from Step 1, while those not applying for CSC should proceed directly to Step 2. Log in to the China Scholarship Council (CSC) online application system for international students to complete the process. Apply online, download and print the Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship, then sign it. CSC application website: http://www.campuschina.org/. Program Type: B, Institution Code: 10698

Step 2. Online application at Xi’an Jiaotong University’s International student application system at http://isso.xjtu.edu.cn/recruit/login. Please check VI. Application Documents for the detailed checklist and prepare corresponding documents.

Step 3. Pay the application fee. (The university will send Payment Notice for Application through system information/email to those who pass the initial review.)

Step 4. Application complete. Students should pay close attention to the application system and registered email; follow up the latest information such as academic review, pre-admission review, tuition payment and acceptance information, etc.

NOTES:

a） Scholarship application fee: 800 RMB, Apply for self-funded project: 500 RMB. Both are non-refundable.

b） Online application is the only way to submit the application. Hard copies are unacceptable.

c） Acceptance Letter of the faculty from MSE, XJTU is required for the Master and Doctoral Degree Program applicant. Please check http://mse-en.xjtu.edu.cn/People.htm for the detail research interests and personal profiles of the faculty information in MSE.

How MSE Selects the Students

Our selection process mainly aims at choosing the students who are most likely to contribute to MSE’s intellectual and cultural community and, ultimately Xi’an Jiaotong University, China or their own country, the whole world. Race, ethnicity, gender, and religion are excluded from the criteria. MSE invites applications from students whose breadth of academic experience and fitness for the specific field of study suggest the potential for scholarly achievement. We require online submission of the application. In general, only applicants holding or going to get the Bachelor’s (for master student’s enrollment) or Master’s Degree (for doctor student’s enrollment) of science and engineering background or equivalent, with distinguished undergraduate records, are admitted. Faculty recommendations and the applicant’s statement of purpose are carefully weighed. Research papers, publications, and other original works may also be considered by the admissions committees during their evaluations.

Performance during the school years, including the number and rigor of courses taken and grades of these courses. Achievement in academic programs, this criterion is measured by time and depth of participation and by the academic progress made by the applicant. MSE has English-teaching courses, thus we require students for the Chinese or English language background. Contributions that you’ve made to the intellectual and cultural vitality of the campus. Personal quality, including leadership ability, character, motivation, insight, tenacity, responsibility and concern for others and the community etc. Other evidence, sustained achievement in any field of intellectual or creative endeavor, accomplishment in extracurricular activities, leadership in school or community organizations, employment and volunteer service.

Basic Admission Requirements（Eligibility）

Students must meet Xi’an Jiaotong Universtity requirements, detailed online at the Xi’an Jiaotong University (http://sie.xjtu.edu.cn). To be an excellent candidate requires more than just test score. To be a part of MSE, he or she should be full of passion and spirit of persistence and exploration to science. Thus MSE considers students with: Diversity of Academic background and experience; Students who have great interests in scientific research; Special qualities of leadership, motivation, and the spirit to serve others and the society For those who want to apply for the master’s degree, we require a bachelor’s diploma or equivalency before coming to study at MSE. For those who want to apply for the doctor’s degree we require a master’s degree or equivalency before coming to study at MSE.
