Abstract

Block copolymers (BCPs) show various periodic nanostructures, such as spheres, cylinders, lamellae, and gyroids depending on the volume fraction of the constituent blocks, and have immense applications to next-generation nanolithography, functional membranes, catalysts, optics, and energy storage devices. In this talk, I will first discuss the fundamental aspects of BCP phase behaviour, focusing on unconventional microdomains independent of the volume fraction of one block, such as asymmetric lamellae, inverted cylinders and gyroids, as well as spheres having a large volume fraction more than 0.5. I tackle the above problems by modulating the chain architecture as well as the blending of different block copolymers. For example, we obtained inverted cylinderswith a volume fraction of the cylinder as large as 0.71 by blending of a six-arm star shaped block copolymer [(AB)6] and a linear AB block copolymer. Also, we found A-spheres in body-centered cubic lattice even at fA = 0.51 by using a dendron-like mikto arm block copolymer [A(AB3)3)].

Then, I will present various applications of BCPs to advanced optics, functional membranes and energy storage materials. Specifically, I will talk the synthesis of various mesoporous materials based on carbon and metal oxides and demonstrate their applications to energy storage and conversion. Also, I introduce an innovative synthetic route for mesoporous metal oxide on flexible polymer substrates by utilizing both thermal activation and oxygen plasma.
