Research interests:

1)      Fundamentals on thermal spraying including splat formation and quantitative characterization of lamellar microstructure by visualization of the pore-net inherent to thermal spray coating, coating formation mechanisms, development and controlling of microstructure of the coating;

2)      Cold spraying for development of potential superhard cermet coatings, intermetallic coating, cost-effective bond coat for TBCs, and nanostructured coatings, fully dense corrosion-resistant alloy coatings

3)      Plasma spraying for design and creation of new generation thermal barrier coatings (TBCs);

4)      Nano-structured functional ceramics preforming and Assembly by nano- and submicrometers ceramics particles by Vacuum cold spraying

5)      HVOF (High velocity oxy-fuel) for high performance cermet coating;

6)      Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) fabrication by thermal spray processes;

7)      Dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) assembly by newly developed Vacuum cold spray system

8)      Re-manufacturing and additive manufacturing via thermal or cold spray processes

Patents:

He also filed 24 Chinese invention patents which were approved. Here, just give a brief explanation to three patents as follows. 

1)      C.-J. Li, G.-J. Yang, H.T. Wang, A preparation method of Intermetallics coating, patent No.: ZL 200710017976.X

Intermetallics such FeAl, NiAl exhibit excellent corrosion and high temperature oxidation resistance, high temperature mechnical behavior, by such as abnormal strengthening effect from temperature over about 400oC. This invent discloses a method to produce Intermetallics coating by cold spraying since it is difficult even impossible to directly deposit Intermetallics due to their intrinsinc low temperature brittleness. The present method includes: produce a mechanical alloy powders by ball milling, cold spray such mechanical alloying coating, then low temperature annealing the coating to transform the alloy to Intermetallics.

2)      C.-J. Li, G.-J. Yang, Y. Li, A thermal barrier coating and its deposition method, Patent No.: ZL 200910218772.1.

This TBC includes two layers: conventional top porous layer, a lamellae well bonded interlayer between metallic bond coat and top porous layer, with a transient layer to increase adhesion between above mention two layer. The different layers are all deposited by APS by just changing powders and deposition temperature. The unique point of the present invent is that the introduction of well bonded interlayer by which the cracking path is moved away from near TGO to over interlayer. High thermal cycling lifetime of such TBC design has been proved by SUNY. It can be expected to extend the service lifetime of TBCs.

3)      C.-J. Li, G.-J. Yang, C..X. Li, Manufacturing method for porous materials; Patent No.: ZL201210038361.6

This invent discloses the method to manufacture porous materials by controlling particle melting state to a semi-molten state and forming a strong bonding upon impact through deposition temperature controlling. It has been demonstrated to be able to form a deposit with porosity from several persent up to 80%. The porous deposits can not only be used as porous materials, but also as porous coatings for different applications. One typical one is porous ceramic coating for high temperature abradable ceramic coating having a porosity over 50%, which can not be deposited the existing spray methods.
